The evening is booked for the 28th September (unfortunately I can't make the actually coffee morning), but we will have cake, refreshments, there will be a little cardmaking class, craft items to buy, handmade goods to buy. There will also be a crafty raffle as well.

If you are a crafter and would love to come and sell your wares then please drop me a line - all we are asking for is a donation of your proceeds to go to MacMillan. If you do other things, maybe a makeup artist, or you do nail art or manicures then we would love to have you as well - again all we will ask is for a donation to the charity.

Next Makey do

I have had a fair few kind enquiries about whether there will be a 'do' this summer and I'm afraid the answer is no. The are changes afoot in our household and not a lot of spare energy or time. I am, however, plotting for next summer. I would really like to get some assistance with the organisation, I have so many ideas, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. My thoughts are running along the lines of last time with some selling their own handmade wears and a bit of making going on. My big idea is that visitors can buy or have given to them with each purchase from a stall an element which they would then come to a Makey table and add to a project. For example a buyer from a crochet stall might be given a small crochet flower, maybe the sweet shop in town would give a button to anyone buying from them. Perhaps the brownies will have had a visit from me and would have made a yo-yo to bring with them. These treasures could then be stuck to a card blank, sewn onto a bag, used to make the features of a softie etc. I am quite excited about this idea and hope it would mean that people would catch the making vibe a bit more. I also wondered last time about making the evening before the 'do' a workshop evening, talk or book related event...what do you think guys? I know its a year away but I want to make it super cool!

Festival of trees

Unfortunately due to lack of interest the decoration making workshops didn't go ahead, which may have been a good thing in the end as the day I had planned them for was thoroughly wet and miserable! There is, however, still a tree in the festival of trees with entirely hand made adornments. If you are in Sandwich this weekend do pop in to St Peters Church to have a look at this magical display and vote for the tree you like best. All funds raised from the festival are going on work on a very old church in the town, I am not a believer but simply from the an aesthetic point of view this church is very important with the most fabulous floor tiles. (The 'handmade' tree which I decorated is number 29- but don't feel obliged to vote for mine- all of the trees are special.)

I am now ready to book the venue for the Christmas tree decoration workshop day! (how exciting) The deal is this; I am looking to have six workshops running all day- 10-4- on Sunday the 22 of November. I will be taking pre-bookings for the workshops. If you would like to run one of these six day workshops I will be asking for;
£20 up front.
A picture of what you will be making.
An age guide for your activity.
A price for your activity.
An estimate of how long the activity will take.
In return I will;
Provide two 6ft tables, one to run your workshop from and one to sell your own products from.
A lovely venue with free parking for you.
Advertise the event.
Organise the pre-booking of the workshops.
You will keep the money from the workshops and any money taken from selling your work.

If you would like to run a workshop please e-mail me or leave a comment on this post. I will be offering a felt Christmas tree workshop (as pictured above) and can offer suffolk puff/yo-yo Christmas trees/dangles as a second option. It would be great to have a total range of crafts. If anyone else would like to send any handmade decs to be hung on the tree in the festival of trees I would be more than happy to receive donations. Feel free to add your business name etc. If you wold like your decoration returned please send an S.A.E- if not I will use the for future festive events or donate them to a local residential home for the elderly.

As with all Makey do events this will be run on a not-for-profit basis by myself.

I have received information today about the 4th Sandwich Festival of Trees. I only asked for the information today which gives a good idea of just ow well organised the event is. The festival is actually a scalp tinglingly beautiful fund raiser, local charities groups and businesses pay for the privilege of putting up a tree in a gorgeous disused church, (well disused as a church, but used an awful lot for other great events!) these trees are decorated by the businesses, often along a theme, e.g the shoe shop hung theirs with little boots etc. The public pay to come in and get all watery eyed at the sight of so many trees against the backdrop of the church and with the addition of some festive music, they then vote on the one they like best in each category, senior and under 18's. There are prizes of £100 for senior and £50 for under 18's. But it's not about the money,or the advertising, it's about the taking part.

So shall we, take part? I propose that Makey 'do' have a tree. I propose that we make decorations for the tree at a day of crafting workshops in November, I propose that we have a date for next summers 'do' all sorted out so we can put 'save the date' cards out for people to take. I would like the tree to be a real community handmade type tree, fun and individual.

If you think you might like to be involved there are several ways that you might be a part of the Makey 'do' tree;

* You could run a workshop, paying a small fee to cover hall costs and charging the public a few pounds to make a seasonal decoration.

* You could help steward the workshop day, being on hand to help out and have fun.

* You could come along and take part in the workshops, paying a small fee to make something and either taking it home with you or lending it to us to display on the tree.

* You could provide a tree (maximum 6ft!)

* You could provide some lighting for the tree.

* You could help advertise the event.

* You could visit the festival of trees and support the event. You might even like to vote for the Makey 'do' tree!

Perhaps there are other ways you might like to get involved, let me know, register your interest here, or mail me direct. I think this will be a really lovely way to keep the Makey 'do' -I don't want to say alive but I guess that's what I mean- through the winter months all ready for next year!!

Kent Crafters Picnic

I am planning a picnic! I thought it would be really nice for a few Kent crafty types to hook up, eat, drink and be merry! If you are free next Sunday 30th of August the plan is to converge on St Augustines, an English Heritage site, at 11am bringing our own picnics and families. Firstly, I apologise for the little break in updates here, but I'm afraid after a hectic few weeks it's just what I needed! I thought it was about time I shared with you the winners from the poster design competition from the do. There were three age categories so we have three ace logos for any Makey 'do' events next summer. I really think these reflect the join in and have a go vibe of the Makey 'do' ethos!
The reception of the first event was very positive and I looked into the possibility of a Christmas fair. There is loads going on in the town for the festive season and unfortunately the hall is pretty much fully booked. I will be planning a 'do' for next summer and have some thoughts about setting up a little differently. It is all a learning process for me.
There is one Christmas event that happens in Sandwich which I am hoping to get involved in. For the last few years there has been a festival of trees in a local now-unused-as-a-church-church. (if that makes sense!) The effect is magical and local businesses and schools etc all take part. What I have in mind is a Makey 'do' tree. I think t would work with a workshop for people to pay a small fee (£3 ish) to come and make a decoration which we would encourage them to allow us to use to decorate the tree and then collect of have posted on to them. I would be interested to hear if anyone would be interested in running such a workshop ad would be looking for as many different craft disciplines as possible- knitting, beading, baking, sewing, paper craft........whatever you think really. I will need to look at venues, and maybe even try for a little funding.......what do you think? I would also look at the possibility of selling refreshments so again let me know if you'd be interested!

Makey-done!

What a lovely day! With over forty stall holders and 700 visitors it was busy all day. We had changeable weather but even those outside generally did well. (I had written a massive block of text here and blogger has eaten it so here's the abridged version!) There was a queue of stallholders outside at 8.50 and a queue of visitors at 10a.m who were thrilled with their goodie bags. I had several queries through the day about the samples so hopefully those who sent contributions will get some extra business from it!
We had so many crafts represented with knitters wood workers, stitchers, photographers, artists, jewellers, bakers, sculptors, felters...the list goes on. The tea and cake went down really well, I saw big plates of three layer chocolate cake wafting past so no one faded away! I was pleased to see lots of visitors doing as well as buying. We had lots of entries to the colouring competition and people making bracelets, brooches, softies, windmills, ATCs and button rings.
I did see lots of shopping taking place too and I'd have done more myself if I'd have found the time! There seemed to be a constant 'buzz' through out the day with no real drop offs.
Lots of visitors asked when there would be another event....I'm not ready to answer that yet! I need a little more time for recovery and to mull over the ideas and comments made about this event. All in all I though the first 'Makey 'do' was a good thing and if I can find away of spreading the work I would be glad to have another day like yesterday- new friends, gorgeous work, smiley faces, friendly chat, sausage and chips, big bits of cake....all good! A huge thanks to all of you who made it what it was. xxxx

Artist trading card swap

Leonie has had a brilliant idea for the 'do' on Saturday and I am really excited! I have shamelessly ripped the text and pictures from her blog as she has explained her idea so beautifully and anyway I am quite busy- especially as I have just added- 'make ATC' to my list of jobs! 'I've also decided we should have an ATC Trading Post. There will be a table were I will start the ball rolling with a selection of ATCs ready to be traded. Bring along your ATCs and then you can either swap one of yours for one on the table, or see if a fellow ATCer is around, so you can trade face to face. Bring your trades in a bag with a big sign on it that displays proudly you are looking to trade your art work. If you are not familiar with ATC's then the basic rules are:* ATCs should be 2.5" x 3.5"* On the back of your ATC you should have your name and some kind of contact details (address, email, blog or phone number)* Your ATC can be decorated using anything - the world is your oyster! Be as adventurous or safe as you please, all ATCs of all levels are welcome And why would you do an ATC? What's the point? Well..........ATCs are for trading only, not selling. When you start collecting ATCs you build up a fantastic range of inspiration and idea's - the beauty of these little works of art are you can contact the artist, so if you would like to know how something has been made, or what has been used then you can. You can also ask people to trade with you if you particularly like their work. Trading can be done face to face, via clubs or through the various ATC groups on the net. You meet some lovely people, who already share your creative passion, what better way to spark a friendship. Also, if you are already a card addict, then this is the perfect excuse for you to craft until your hearts content!'

How cool is that? Leonie and I will be putting out some bits and bobs on the colouring table so if you won't have chance to make an ATC to swap before Saturday you'll be able to do one on the day! Swaps will run from around Leonies stand in the main hall.

I have heard from the guildhall that we will indeed be able to use the forecourt to extend the event outside. I am really pleased about this, it makes the 'do' very visible in the town and everyone who drives around the one way system will come straight past! I have five confirmed stall holders for the forecourt and an ice cream seller. I have room for one more so if you fancy a day in the sunshine do let me know.

I am so excited about Saturday and am just making sure everything is in place for a brilliant day. I still have some slots un-filled for supervising the colouring/ATC table and also for meeting and greeting at the information station. Do let me know if you can spare an hour.

The goodie bags have been assembled! I have one last contribution to show you with these brochures from the fabulous Clothkits. Making these bags has certainly put my budgeting at risk! Clothkits produce pre-printed fabric from which clothing, dolls accessories can all be cut with no need for a pattern, all the markings are on the fabric. What could be better for a new sewer or a quick and very stylish project? So with all the goodies in, well maybe there will be a couple more bits to pop in on the day it seemed a good idea to cross 'make up bags' off my list. Two friends helped and we were very well organized, except that I hadn't really reckoned on how much space 60 big juicy goodie bags would take up. Here they all are on my breakfast bar, just waiting, waiting for the first through the door next Saturday.
Here is a picture of the typical contents but I had to crop it, all the goodies just wouldn't fit into one little picture!

I'm still to confirm the final stallholders list and am looking for a face painter to come along, and hopefully an ice cream vendor. The long range weather forecast is good, so fingers crossed for a calm week followed by a busy weekend!

I have a Folksy shop; and sell through a couple of lovely shops including Tamarisk in Deal.

I have lived in Sandwich for about twelve years, but am from Dorset and still feel like a West Country girl- my love.

6) Who is your all-time hero?

Marilyn Monroe- just for being a bit curvy and glamorous. On a less shallow level all those who fight oppression

7) Who got you started on your crafty journey?

I come from a long line of makers and do-ers. I have always been surrounded by the opportunity to create but I particularly value the input of my Mum and Dad, the creative sparks just seem to fly when I am around them.

8) What colour draws you most?

I store my materials sorted into colours, purple is the box which is hardest to close but I am a great lover of all things bright and a tiny bit clash-y.

9) Where do you go for inspiration?

Like I said Mum and Dad seem to get the new ideas going but really the materials lead me- a new ball of wool or a few buttons and I’m off!

10) Do you dunk?

Oh yes…..I dunk…..a lot!

It just keeps coming!

I have spent the last few weeks in an almost constant state of pleasant surprise at all the lovely goodies I have received and there has been a final flurry of loveliness. I managed to get my own contribution finished in the shape of 60 bookmarks/coupons. I am primarily a fabric floozy but do like my paper crafts so had a ball making these. If you'd like to see my other work I have a Folksy shop. I had a parcel from the U.S too which is pretty cool. A Rats Pyjamas is my swap partner for A seaside swap and Wanda very sweetly decided to send me snowman buttons and cards and three sets of the most gorgeous Pink persimmon stamps.
My next package was from Nifty Thrifty, a very talented lady who makes rosettes from reclaimed fabric and also works in ceramic to make jewellery. Nifty Thrifty is based in Devon and her work carries the calm that I aassociate with that part of the world, just lovely.
I have two friends that operate as Phoenix card traders, even if you hand make all your own cards their tissue paper, organza ribbon and wrapping paper are excellent materials. Helen has kindly donated these colour in mask packs as part of the children's colouring competition prize. I have so far resisted colouring them myself, good job I won't be bored between now and the big day!
Finally, contributions from Original Minnie, these cards so appeal to me, obviously I love my fabric, but I love the ethos too; vintage fabric, a one off item, well made.
The paper with the main advert is out tomorrow so word should really start to spread and I may well be able to offer some more pitches for the 'do', they would be outdoors but if you are following this wishing that you hadn't missed the boat, do drop me a line, you might not have!

Simply cosie

Can you see in this picture what 'Simply H' as sent for the goodie bags? The sweetest little beach hut key rings! I am really excited about Helen's stall at the 'do'- especially the mermaids! (although if there are more cute beach huts I may be torn!) Unfortunately Leaf Trading Post heard about the do when all the tables had already been taken, I would have loved to have them along and hope that if there is another 'Makey' event they can make it. They have sent some fliers for the goodie bags which will hopefully whet the appetite for any future appearances.

I posted a while back about the knitted stunt cakes that Search Press had lent me for a display I am planning. Well along with the cakes they also sent these amazing tea cosies! They are the models from a book by Loani Prior called 'Wild Tea Cosies'. I have just bought a pretty pink tea pot and so have been able to get some decent pics to show you. These will look so ace all displayed nicely on a table, directing people to the real tea and cake.

Yet more packages have arrived today and I have spent the evening making up the bags with a couple of pals. They are fantastic and I have a felling there maybe even more bits and bobs to go in before the day itself. Pictures of my stacked breakfast bar to follow!

Card trick

Pick a card, any card! Mels Hadmade has sent something for everyone in a pack of gorgeous cars for the goodie bags. These really show case the breadth of Mels skill. See more at her Folksy shop.

I have had another lovely stallholder send for the goodie bags, Neroli was one of the first to sign up and complete a profile quiz. Her photos of her work are gorgeous but now I see these bag dangles in the flesh I can really see how Nerolis table will shimmer and shine! Neroli is also planning to have an hourly demo from her table to let people see how it's done and have a go themselves! This 'have-a-go' vibe is such an exciting part of the event, and for me will be what makes people stay a while, pick up ideas, chat, mooch and get inspired.

I will be introducing you to another stall holder in the next post. Theresa is a ceramicist whose work is really charming, come and have a look (and see whether or not she's a dunker).

The main newspaper advert is going in soon for the Makey 'do'- the photographer is calling on Wednesday, I am not keen, see what I am doing for the 'do? Is there really no such thing as bad publicity even if she has greying hair and three chins?!

The sweet smell of freebies

I'm so glad 'Pants and Paper' are having a stall at the 'do'. Sam has been so friendly and supportive , but I was still taken aback to receive a big box stuffed with goodies for the bags. These beautiful beach huts smell delicious, check out more of Sam's gorgeous work in her Folksy shop.

Another Folksy shop keeper has also been kind enough to send a package this week. WOLLIES makes the coolest softies, quirky and individual. I love them and am so pleased to have some vouchers, cards ad some very intriguing little envelopes which I have used all my will power to resist opening! In other Makey 'do' news, I have a proof to approve for the KM 'What's On' and a 6ft x 3ft vinyl banner on order for the outside of the Guildhall. I have sent a second mailing to all stallholders, so if you think your name is down and you don't get any post this week do let me know. Locus Arts- down to earth strawberry dunkers!

I thought I'd check what 'locus' means and although I don't know if this is the definition the group uses I really like this;

For me this is creating- intense concentration, which banishes all other worries or concerns! Let's find out more about the group and their work.

Answered as ‘Locus Arts’ art group, not as individuals.

1) If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be?
We’d be a fruit cake, because it includes lots of different elements, working together to make one fabulous whole.

2) What will you be doing at “A Makey ‘do’”?
We will be bringing out range of Butterfly Cottage ceramics. These are bought-in ceramics decorated by hand that we sell as a sort of ‘side line’ to help boost our funds. This means we can put on bigger and better exhibitions each year. This year, we have been able to book The Horsebridge Somerset Maugham Gallery for two weeks in August. If anyone would like to come along, our exhibition runs from 5th –18th August, and is open daily

3) Fish and Chips or Curry?
I think we’d all be fish and chips – we’re rather down-to-earth!

4) Where else can your wares usually be found?
We don’t have a permanent home, but we exhibit regularly at venues across East Kent. If anyone wants any pieces in particular, we can be contacted through our website www.locusarts.co.uk.

We don’t actually live in Sandwich, but it’s our spiritual home! We have been running arts event here for almost a decade now, and we love it here.

We like Picasso, because he did what he wanted, how he wanted, against public taste and opinion. We also like his ability to create in many different media – he was never shy of having a go!
7) Who got you started on your crafty journey?
We love colour, shape and form wherever it pops up. Craft shows are full of creative people working in diverse media with a range of highly developed skills. We love to browse, wonder, and take inspiration from other people’s work.
8) What colour draws you most?
Blue – the colour of the seas and the skies.
9) Where do you go for inspiration?
We find inspiration anywhere and everywhere. It might be a face, a landscape, a piece of fabric or a magazine photo, or even a film on the television.

We dunk strawberries into chocolate ……………

I am now getting interviews back every day which is so exciting! I am trying to blog daily now, but am balancing this against other preparations for the big day. I have also received some more amazing contributions for the goodie bags, all I can say for now is that the bags are going to smell fantastic! I also am expecting a parcel from over seas. I can't quite believe a friend from the U.S has felt able to contribute to the goodie bags. I am so excited!

Miss makes buttons?

I promised I'd show you what Clover crafts had sent for the goodie bags didn't I? Well each of her fliers has a little pack of buttons attached- very nice! I promise I haven't pinched any out but I'll just say the little fish are very tempting! Don't forget you can tempt yourself at Sheilas E-bay shop.

I got another parcel this morning. This one came from Kent, which is always nice. 'Miss Makes Stuff' will becoming to the 'do' as a guest, maybe next time (if I can manage a next time!) she will come and sell her lovely wares. I love these shrink plastic badges and Angela was kind enough to pop a button brooch in for me. Visit her Folksy shop for more accessories heaven.

A fruit cake- I have a mixed range of interests and for a fruit cake you need lots of ingredients.

2) What will you be doing at “A Makey ‘do’”?

I will be selling buttons-mainly from the 1940's- plastics, pearls, glass, wood, buckles and vintage haberdashery.

3) Fish and Chips or Curry?

Definitely Fish and Chips with tomato sauce

4) Where else can your wares usually be found?

I have a shop on Ebay- Clover Crafts and Curios, my ebay ID is sheilajuno. I also have a stall at a Vintage Fair that is held in Whitstable each month. Occasionally I can also be found at local groups/exhibitions.

5) Do you usually hang out in Sandwich, or are you a visitor?

Yes I visit Sandwich on a regular basis, not as much as I used to since many of the antique shops and the dolls house shop closed, both of which are my passions.

6) Who is your all-time hero?

Beatrix Potter for her wonderful tales and the legacy she left to the Lake District. Many women writers, Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie being two favourites.

7) Who got you started on your crafty journey?

Meeting lots of talented people when I was living in Rutland, which lead to opening a craft shop in the 1980's. When I moved to Kent in 1986 I began a career in social work, since retiring I began 'thrifting' and moved into buying and selling, something that I have always wanted to do.

8) What colour draws you most?

The colours of the rainbow.

9) Where do you go for inspiration?

Antique and Collectibles Fair, Dolls House Shows, exhibitions of craft work.

10) Do you dunk?

Most definitely-hate it though when the biscuit breaks and ends up in the bottom of the mug!

Brewing up a silver storm.

The day spent talking about the 'do' with local shop keepers has certainly borne fruit! Everyone asked has displayed a poster and three business have already provided goodie bag items. Kim Wood has given fliers advertising his jewellers. Jutsons have given me some very glossy brochures from which I could make a very long wish list!

Brewers shoe shops were particularly helpful and nice, as always! They have given me lots of fliers, accessories for the goodie bags and a back pack as a prize for the children's colouring competition. It's all brilliant! I am really glad that the local shops are behind the event, Sandwich is very unusual in that 90% of the shops are independents. This makes mooching the shops a real pleasure and people are all too happy to help and advise.

I've also had two more packages from crafters, and stall holders at that. Woobarb has sent these knitting row markers. They are so pretty and beautifully packaged. Woo is moving to my this part of the world soon, how nice!

I have also received some cards from Karen of Contemporary embroidery. The cards give a really good impression of the delicacy of Karens work, and I can see them going on peoples
notice boards for their aesthetics as well as for the contact details on the back.

Let them eat cake

I don't know if I mentioned it here or on my personal blog but Search Press were good enough to send me the book '20 to make- knitted cakes' so that I could knit some stunt cakes to promote the 'd0' and to display on the day with a sign directing people to the real cake. I made a Swiss roll and realised that getting a decent display made might take a while. Search Press came to the rescue once again offering that I could borrow the sample cakes that were made for the photographs in the book. They arrived along with some mad and brilliant tea cosies, 60 brochures for the goodie bags complete with vouchers for money off the first order.

I just know this is all going to look ace on the day, and Paulines real cakes they taste just as good as these look!

I spent some time last week visiting Sandwich businesses. I handed out posters for display and asked if people wanted fliers in the bags. It was really good to chat about the 'do' and people were really excited. We have an amazing house and garden in Sandwich in the 'Salutation'. I have leaflets from them to go in the goodie bags and they have agreed to hand out our fliers to everyone from their ticket booth. If it is a nice day (fingers crossed) I think a visit to the 'do' and the gardens would make a brilliant day out and well worth a little drive!

I am waiting to hear whether we will be able to put stalls on the guildhall forecourt if we can this adds a whole new dimension to the do and would give a very visible presence in the town. I have no more fingers left to cross!

Simply H? - simply gorgeous!

Simply H is a fair professional, running her own events in Whitstable. It will be lovely to have Helen at the do for experience, but more especially for the gorgeous items she makes!

1) If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be?
Well, I am away with the fairies most of the time and love chocolate so a chocolate fairy cake!

2) What will you be doing at “A Makey ‘do’”?
I will be selling my handmade fabric bags, dolls, mermaids, appliquéd kids t-shirts and clothes and handmade cards.

3) Fish and Chips or Curry?
I do love fish and chips, but it would have to be a curry – preferably Thai!

4) Where else can your wares usually be found? I am about to set up a Folksy shop, but apart from that I run craft fairs in Whitstable where I sell them and also sell a few bits in the little shop in Whitstable where I work part-time ‘Taking the Plunge’.

5) Do you usually hang out in Sandwich, or are you a visitor?
I love Sandwich; we have been a few times, but not as many as we should since it is so near to us! It is a lovely little town.

6) Who is your all-time hero?
Ohh, do I have to pick one! A new hero is Heather Ross because not only does sew, create patterns and fabric but she is also an amazing illustrator too! I love illustrators Julie Morstad and Edward Gorey and Felicity Wishes illustrator Emma Thomson - anyone who illustrates or creates at home as an actual career is a hero to me!

7) Who got you started on your crafty journey?
My dad, sister and nan are all very artistic and I have always drawn and went to art college. I am not sure where the sewing came from! My mum had a sewing machine, which she gave me a couple of years ago as she never used it and I just fell in love with sewing and making things

8) What colour draws you most?
Blues and greens – but funnily enough I don’t seem to have nearly enough fabrics in these colours!

9) Where do you go for inspiration?
I get lots of inspiration from reading blogs, my kids and family and their funny ways and living by the sea is very inspirational – Whitstable has some lovely, independent shops, which are very inspiring such as Taking the Plunge for lovely gifts and Frank – which sells work by British artists and crafty sorts!

10) Do you dunk?
Oh no! I’m afraid I don’t really understand soggy biscuits! I like them nice and crunchy!

I know my little girl is going to be spellbound by the mermaid dollies, well actually I am!

More bits coming in for the goodie bags....a selection of hand printed lovelies from The Birch Tree, including the cutest baby grows, buttons and shopping bags. I am again sure that the people who receive these in a bag will be thrilled to bits, I would be! The Birch Tree also has some lovely clothes on Folksy, really unique!

I had a lovely parcel of goodies myself from Daisy Davies this morning and she has put some business cards in for the goodie bags. The smocked dress she made for Anna is very very cute and again a bit different from what everyone else is wearing. I'm sure if people visit her website I will see many more little smocked dresses popping up around here!

I will be finalising the table holders for the do at the end of the week and after that will begin my campaign of poster distribution. B.A.S.H have been very supportive again with mailing to their supporters, lending pencils and crayons for the colouring competition, a clicker so we know how many visitors we get and another huge stack of envelopes. Thanks guys.

I am looking for some more help for the big day in the form of 'stewards'. If you are having a stall and bringing a friend, live locally or wanted to get involved but were too shy to have a stall do please consider volunteering for an hour of 'meet and greeting' on the door, or of being a 'spare body'- helping with general gophering etc. Please let me know what you might be up for, I'd be very grateful!

Just over a month to go and boy are things hotting up around here! The goodie bag box is now full and has now spilled into the second huge cardboard delight in the dinning room. But look what amazing stuff is still coming in; Bespoke silver designs, who will be at the event (look back a little for her profile) is offering 10% off on her stall to goodie bag holders with her flier...great plan!

Another stall holder has sent goodies in the form of these super-cute felt/button pins from Dottybird. Sam is a total felt genius and she'll be selling fibres and equipment for needle felting as well as other loveliness on the big day. I may have to plead a bit with Sam though. one of the buttons she has used on these says 'Simon' and is all mounted on a little heart; the love of my life?-Yep Simon, I'd love one of these to wear close to my heart!

I thought that might be the end of the goodies, I thought surely surely there won't be anything else! Oh how wrong can you be.....just look at what flower power has sent, a whole box full of little envelopes, each containing two of her bright and smooth polymer beads. I have done some polymer clay work myself but Flower Powers work is very very polished, in all senses of the word. I was so thrilled to find a necklace in the box just for me, you can see pictures on my blog soon.

Thank you all, if anyone else out there is planning to send a package can I ask please for them to reach me before the end of June. As far as tables go I can only take a couple more stall holders so please get your forms in this week if you are interested. There is a chance that we might be able to use the Guildhall Forecourt. If anyone may be interested in having an open air table at a reduced price then do let me know. Do you remember that I said that Search Press were being all amazingly helpful with the do? They've sent prizes, brochures and they also put the word out amongst their authors and asked if any of them wanted to come along. Leonie said 'yes!' and I am really looking forward to meeting Leonie as I get the impression that apart from being very talented she might just be a bit cheeky-silly!

1) If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be? Well, I’d like to think I’d be a little fruity number, but I’d probably end up being a massive chocolate fudge cake, with the fudge bits missing.

2) What will you be doing at “A Makey ‘do’”? I will be signing my book and demonstrating some card making and stamping techniques (probably talking to much and eating cake)

3) Fish and Chips or Curry? Chips n curry please, on a bap!

4) Where else can your wares usually be found? My book can be found in good book shops and crafty venue’s, and I can be found demonstrating on QVC from time to time (or hiding in the background every Tuesday when I’m in helping my boss Dawn Bibby, set up her weekly craft shows)

5) Do you usually hang out in Sandwich, or are you a visitor? I love Sandwich. We have recently moved to Canterbury, so it’s now somewhere we like to nip for a visit.

6) Who is your all-time hero? I think Joy Adams, Born Free lady. There are lots of people who are truly amazing though, so it’d be a long list

7) Who got you started on your crafty journey? When I was a wee one I always crafted with my parents, so they were my inspiration. My journey became my occupation when I left my “proper” job for a life of beans on toast and craft fairs!

8) What colour draws you most? Blue, brown, purple, green…….It’s mood dependant.

9) Where do you go for inspiration? On a day to day basis I get craft kits to work on, so get inspired from them. I’ve also started an Art and Design course so that’s helping keeping new idea’s flowing. I think my main inspirational time is when I’m walking the dogs – it must be their happy faces and the fresh air.

10) Do you dunk? Absolutely and generally plop then fish.

I have also placed a very pricey newspaper ad to go in the KM What's on the week before the event. This insert goes out all over Kent and apart from posters and fliers will be my main advertising. Cut-offs and cards

Nuada Accessories have sent some business cards for the goodie bags. (you will have to keep an eye on my other blog if you want to see what I ordered form there!) I was really pleased with my purchase and am happy to recommend a look at the shop.

I have had a measure up at the Guildhall and have started to look at a table plan. Places are filling up and I think I will make the 11th of June a provisional cut off date for stallholder sign up. If you have a form kicking around that is waiting to be posted to me, please do send it. I will keep a short reserve list so if you miss the deadline but are happy to be 'on-call' do please get in touch.

I am looking for more stall holders to take part in the profile interview. It will be me next otherwise!! I could also do with some help making a button for the blog, I have a jpeg of the logo if anyone can help. Thanks xxx

Badge-rd to death

I have been given some leaflets by my Embroiderers Guild branch secretary to display at the 'do'. I am a big fan of my local guild, they have excellent speakers, a fab bring and buy table and a residential weekend which is always a hoot. The guild itself produces two excellent embroidery magazines, holds a massive collection of textiles and aims to promote embroidery t one and all. If you are a keen stitcher looking up your local guild might open up loads of possibilities for learning new skills and making new friendships for you too.

I have also received these beauties from Swirly. I am sorry to say that Swirly actually wore out her badge machine making these for the Makers, Do-ers and Helpers. I think these are just lovely and I hope they make us all fell special and proud and like we belong to something great and good and well crafted on July 11th. I hope we can stand together and hold our heads high and raise our glasses to HANDMADE. I have to go now, I'm welling up!

Crafty weekend

'Oh I do like to be beside the seaside...' especially when there are handmade goodies on sale! Come along to a Craft & Gift Fair taking place in Whitstable on Saturday 30th May at St Mary's Hall / Umbrella Community Centre, Oxford Street.
From 10.00am till 4.30pm you will be able to buy some quirky and totally original items, handmade by crafters and artists to really add something special to a home or as a gift.
There will be everything from jewellery, bags, barge art, cards, seaside decorations, ceramics, stained glass, photographic prints and yummy homemade cakes to name just a few! So, as you know I have been working on the goodie bags for the do, trying to get a really good mixture of relevant items I haven't phoned loads of big companies, I wasn't sure I'd have any joy and the ethos for the event is very much local and handmade. I did however contact Search Press. Their brochure dropped out of a magazine and whilst I was flicking through it getting all excited I remembered that they are a Kent company. Anyway I bit the bullet and picked up the phone; Would they like to send me 60 brochures- Yes, would I like a coupon in them-Yes please! Would I like to send them more details of the event?-Sure thing. Would I like some books to have as maybe a raffle prize?-Ummmm YES!!! Would I like them to put the word out amongst their authors and see if anyone wants to do a demo/book signing-Ummm Yes please, thank you very much, that would be lovely, gush, gush, giggle, gush!

Honestly they have been amazing and just look at what we now have prizes for our colouring competition; I will be printing off sheets with an outline of the Makey 'do' logo for adults and children to colour, decorate, draw a background for, generally go wild all over. The best from each category will then be the logo for the next Makey 'do' summer event. The colouring competition will be free to enter and I would encourage anyone in the area to drop in and have a go. If you have time on your hands I really would highly recommend a visit to the Search Press website. The books are excellent and the site also has a forum, competition and free monthly projects and printable designs. I think it's a fantastic resource. This months printable is from a book of Aboriginal designs so anyone doing school projects (groan!!!) might want to keep an eye on this page!

Three more parcels to share with you, literally! I was blown away by the class of these labels and pegs from Magenpie. The work that Magenpie sells on her Etsy and Folksy shops is equally unusual and well crafted. I am definitely tempted by the large key fobs as I am a real key worrier!

Next up these cute clutch of owls stamped on the back of all these different sample cards, just ready to send as a really individual little note. More of Creative Cards paperwork can be found here all with a really funky feel and a personality which means the cards almost choose themselves for an individual. (if you know what I mean!!)

Finally a parcel from Treaclezoo. I had hoped Treaclezoo might be there in person at the 'do' but she is otherwise engaged. Seeing her work 'in the felt' has made me want to see her whole stall even more! Check out the winking ravioli!

I have always been interested in arts and crafts and have tried my hand at all sorts of things but the jewellery making has really overtaken me in the last couple of years and of course, as I am getting married soon, I wanted to make my own wedding jewellery and things have snowballed since then!

Blues…..aqua and turquoise and of course, silver!

9) Where do you go for inspiration?
Inspiration tends to jump out at me at anytime – I just find myself making things and wondering how I got there!

Of course!

Whoop! Another dunker! I have Famous Shamus now confirmed as attending, a local character who makes 'dunkable cookies'- yummmm. I do love reading these interviews and do hope you find them interesting too, I am looking for my next willing stall holder to be profiled, otherwise it might be me!!! I have had three more gorgeous parcels containing goodie bag items and I have some photos to share later in the week.

I have a big decision to make regarding the budget for the 'do'- I have a quote from the East Kent Mercury for an Ad in the 'What's on' section which has a very good spread and readership. The cost is high and placing the ad would mean little left over for the free activities I was planning for local school children. I will put up a voting box on the blog, please do let me know our thoughts!

Flower fairytales

It may not be immediately clear from the photo but the lovely Hatastic has sent the sweetest floral hair clips for the goodie bags! These really are darling and I have a lovely mental image of big and little girls running around East Kent sporting these on July 11th. If you have a summer wedding and a good dose of panache do check out Hatastic fascinators, they are really special!

The other contribution comes from a Misi seller. Photo fairytales get creative with your photos and can put your children in new and exciting settings, (not literally un fortunately!) and your friends and families on the front of magazines. These would be lovely gifts so if you have a 40th or a 4th birthday that you are struggling to find something unique for do check out their website.

Bespoke silver designs, made the traditional way, link by silver link. Gorgeous! I am amazed at how many wonderful crafts people have been on my doorstep for so long and I never even knew!

1. If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be?
If I were a cake, I'd like to think I would be a Lemon Cheesecake,all light and creamy with a hidden tang. In reality however, I'm probably a fruit scone,that is, what you see is what you get. I think my friends and family probably see me as a Hot Cross Bun,especially when I am making something and it's not going according to plan.
2. What will you be doing at “A Makey ‘do’”?
At a Makey do I will be selling my handcrafted silver jewellery and a few silver gifts such as bookmarks. I make all my items using traditional methods. I make all my own links,join them together and solder them into chains. I
also make bangles,earrings and pendants.I am registered with the London Assay Office and have my own maker's mark. Making silver items originally started as a hobby, but I have recently started doing it as a way of making a living.
3. Fish and Chips or Curry?
Curry! Definitely. Every time.
4. Where else can your wares usually be found?
At craft fairs and I hold jewellery parties in people's homes.
5. Do you usually hang out in Sandwich, or are you a visitor?
Unfortunately, I don't often get to Sandwich, but I like it there, particularly along the river.
6. Who is your all-time hero?
Hmm, tough one that. Probably Martin Luther King, but I am rather partial to Robbie Williams.(Yum!).
7. Who got you started on your crafty journey?
My tutor. He has worked in the trade for over 30 years and taught silversmithing for approximately 8 years. I started as a complete novice with no previous experience and he showed unending patience. Also, my partner has given me loads of support and encouragement and believed in my ability even when I doubted it myself.
8. What colour draws you most?
That depends on my mood. I like the greens found in nature but I also like a deep, rich red..
9. Where do you go for inspiration?
Anywhere. I get ideas from the beach, from the woods, from wrapping paper. Inspiration is all around,you just have to open your eyes to see it.
10. Do you dunk?
No. I think it is wrong to corrupt a perfectly good cup of tea.

Oh another non-dunker! I hope won't end up in the minority!

Another Misi seller up next, bookmarks from nspired stores. These are such a good idea, hopefully people will use them for a long time to come, and buy up some really lovely and unusual stone and wire jewelery

lauren ceramics has contributed a mystery! The beautiful business cards give a hint to what might be hiding inside.....I don't want to spoil the surprise for those lucky 60 but I would be thrilled to pin one of these to a jacket or hold something on the fridge door with something from a different envelope.

If you love handmade all of these artisans shops are well worth a visit.

In case any one is thinking...."but why give it away, surely the point is that people will buy things on the day?" For me the goodie bags serve several purposes;

'Free' advertising for any crafters who want it

Showcasing an even greater variety of work than we could fit in the hall on the day

To create a buzz on the day, making people feel really warm towards the event

Getting those bags with the Makey 'do' brand out into town to bring more people in

To encourage people to come to future events

There, that's why! I am always up for more contributions, just send them along before the end of June. Then I shall be opening a bottle of wine and putting those bags together and feeling like a cross between the Easter Bunny and Father Christmas!

He will also be bringing along some doorstops made by my brilliant Uncle Ben, (the dude in the hat)- I swear to you for Dorset these guys are fairly hair-free. And anyone who makes any jokes about the beardy family resemblance is off the guest list!

In other business I am having such fun with the goodie bags, I have loads to show you in the next post, but for this one how about these darling promotional cards from Raffique. Aren't they charming?

I am beginning to realise that the way to spread the word about the 'do' is to do just that. Talking to everyone about it is opening up so many possibilities. Yesterday I visited Quex Park Craft Barn and spoke to three lovely unit holders. All had different ideas about how they might want to be involved, from displaying posters in their windows to having a stall, to sending fliers. I thought I might ask the Hotel in town where we went for a rare glass of wine if they wanted to put some vouchers in the goodie bags and found that the receptionist was a Brownie leader who offered to give fliers to all her pack.....it just grows and grows! I would be very grateful if you could join me in wittering on about it to all your nearest and dearest too!

The goodie bags for the Makey do will be amazing. I know that's a big statement, but it's also something of which I'm confident. I ordered my pay-day treat from Folksy and cheekily asked Viv from Concept Design Form if she'd like to put some extra business cards in for the bags, she did just that and I'm sure people checking out her shop will be really impressed by what they find. I also had some 'products' in the post which is really exciting! Meplusmolly had said she would send some lovelies and before I even opened the package the scent of lavender got me all excited.

I wasn't very disciplined about opening the parcels with lots of photos- I was too excited!

Yep, that's right there are sixty beautiful badges brooches and lavender sachets all with the most amazing textures and colours. I am so impressed. I would say this was worth a 10a.m visit to Sandwich Guildhall on July 11th, wouldn't you? Do have a mooch around meplussmollys other work, it really is beautiful.

I am obviously more than happy to receive more contributions for the goodie bags. The bags themselves have arrived. I am using nice brown paper bags with handles and will stick the Makey do logo and blog address to the front for advertising on the day, so plenty of room for more loveliness. Looby was kind enough to post the event on Misi and I have two more offers from sellers there for items. Neroli has kindly offered to do the same on Coriandr- (thanks, I promise I will send you the press release soon!)

All coming along nicely, the next stage is getting quotes for other advertising, finding more stall holders and talking to the local schools about getting fliers in book bags. All good!

Isn't she lovely? This is Lou, and this is her amazing work. I am so pleased she is coming along to the Makey 'do', her wares are really different from the other stalls. I really hope she brings along some of her Hello Kitty goodies, I have a little girl here who would love it! Definitely a chocolate fudge cake – yummy, soft and gooey!

I’ll be selling my handmade wares! Namely cards, notelets, notebooks, clipboards, gift boxes, gift tags, trinket boxes – and anything else I make between now and then!

Neither – don’t like Chinese either, but I am partial to a pizza every now and then!

I always loved making stuff as a kid, my Grandad was a carpenter and I loved playing in his workshop, nailing random bits of wood together – so maybe that’s where it all started?!

Anything bright – I love fuschia pinks, lime green, orange – really funky colours!

9) Where do you go for inspiration?

Into my craft room! I find these easiest way to overcome Crafter’s block is just to work through it, and once I start pulling out gorgeous papers and stuff I’m away!

Most definitely not – that just leads to soggy badness!

I have had more free lovelies for the makey do! Firstly a big wodge of envelopes, courtesy of B.A.S.H (thanks!) it might seem a small thing to be pleased about but anything I don't have to pay Makey 'do' money for means more promotion for the event. If you have been waiting for a receipt for your table money the arrival of these means you should receive one soon! Talking of table money, the last cheque I needed to cover the hall hire arrived yesterday form an unexpected corner- I had begged and nagged Dad to bring along some of his and Uncle Bens lovely wood work to the 'do'. I knew he wouldn't let me down and now it is his table cheque that has put me in a good place to start the exciting bits next. Thanks Dad! I will be posting Dad out an interview tomorrow so hopefully the next Makey do artist to be profiled will be my favourite beardy wood turner!
I also received a big package yesterday which has given me the backbone for the goodie bags. I e-mailed Workbox magazine to ask if they could put the event in their 'What's on' section and offered to put fliers in the goodie bags. They said 'yes' to the first and 'no' to the second-fliers aren't very exciting, we'll send you 60 copies of the current magazine! I love Workbox, it is a really well balanced magazine and I hope that the first 60 through the door love it too! I have had some more kind offers of goodies from my friends on Folksy, I also have a Misi stallholder who has offered to put the event on the forums there. I just need a Coriandr seller and maybe an Etsy seller who is a member of a U.K sellers group. Any help for that very gratefully received.

I am now having a healthy flow of cheques coming in for the 'do' and have had lots of good news over the last few days; 1) The venue has fixed last years prices so just two more tables to sell and I can start on the fun bits. 2) A local young stitcher has agreed to run a softie making table for me at the event, I love the idea we will introduce younger types to sewing! 3) Two magazines have now agreed to list the event in their 'what's on' sections, and one has promised 60 back issues for the goodie bags. 4) the gorgeous Lush and Lovely has sent me her interview responses so read on for another sneaky peak of what you might be seeing in July!;

First Freebies

Look what the postman bought this morning! Swirly was the first to respond to the call to arms for freebies for the Makey 'do' goodie bags and I can't believe what a great start we have! In the box was Swirlys' business cards, (which are punched and stitched!), Cuteable business cards which Swirly writes for and 60 samples of Swirlys work which you can see more of in her Folksy shop. I just knew I'd be a bit jealous of the goodie bag recipients but Swirly put prezies in for me and my children (THANKS SWIRLY!) so I shall live with it! I have had another three offers of freebies so far and a confident that I should be able to put together something really lovely, if you'd like to contribute do please let me know.

I have e-mailed or posted out the sign-up forms for the event so if you would like one and have not yet received one; just ask! I have even had my first cheque back. I need to 'sell' ten tables at £15 each to cover the hire of the hall so will be really happy when that is under my belt. Poster design has now been approved by B.A.S.H and they have started going up around the town. If you live in Kent and could display a 'do you want a table?' poster please leave a comment and I can send one.

Freebies!

Progress continues on the plans for the 'do'. I had a meeting last week with the local charity B.A.S.H who are supporting the event and they have now given me a copy of their logo which needs to go on the advertising material- after that?-all systems go. I will add the logo to the sign-up forms which should make them ready next week. I have been thinking more about creative ways to promote the event and have contacted the local Adult Education marketing department. I have offered to display their September prospectus at the event in return for them displaying posters advertising the 'do' at all their centre across Kent, which is nice!

I have also been thinking about goodie bags. Lots of people have kindly expressed an interest in this event who cannot actually make it in person, well I plan to make up 60 goodie bags to give out at the event and if anyone would like to send cards, products, fliers, anything really, in any number, I would ensure they were shared out across the bags. It would be a good way to get your name into the minds of people who are already hand-made fans. If you are interested, please leave a comment with your e-mail and I'll be in touch.

I am so chuffed to tell you that Karen has decided to make the mammoth journey down the country to Kent to come to the 'do'. I checked back recently and when I discovered blogs Karens' was the first I added to my favourites. I hope you enjoy getting a good look at her work as much as I have.

1. If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be? Probably a plain sponge cake, despite my 'frigid' unapproachable exterior I am very soft with a head full of pretty, pleasant thoughts. For instance, there was a question once on family fortunes....name something you find in the woods...Much to the amusement of my family I instinctively shouted out 'teddy bears'....see what I mean!

2. What will you be doing at the 'makey do'? First I will be panicking at meeting new people, then I will be panicking that no one will buy any of my stuff, then I will most likely lose something, I always lose things. Then I will be trying to be very restrained in not buying everyone elses stuff because I am always overwhelmed at how lovely other peoples work is. I am hoping to be too busy to actually do any making on the day and I want to have fun.

3. Fish and chips or curry? Neither...sorry!! Don't like fish and chips or curry but I do love Chinese food, char sui, prawns etc

5. Do you usually hang out in Sandwich or are you a visitor? I have never been to Kent in my life so this will be my first time. It is quite a long way from Lancashire!!

6. Who is your all time Hero? I have thousands...all the women throughout time who have struggled to raise healthy, happy children.

7. Who first got you started on your crafty journey? As a child people were always making things, my mum, my grandmother's. I began to knit and crochet aged about 12 but was put off sewing for years by my experience of needlework classes at Grammar School where the only thing we were allowed to make was a navy blue gingham pinny for domestic science, how I hated that pinny. In fact I am suprised it never gave me a life long aversion to gingham! When I had my own children I constantly made things for them and it all progressed from there I suppose.

8. What colour draws you most? To wear it is black all the way. I always look like I am on my way to a funeral or a wake. White is my favourite colour to work with though. As most of my work evolves from a maternal perspective white signifies for me the purity of the relationship between a mother and her child.

9. Where do you go for inspiration? Quite simply, inside my head.

10. Do you dunk? Always!!

Well hello there Neroli, fancy telling us all a bit more about yourself?

1) If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be?

I’d be a massive chocolate fudge cake. Large, gloopy, chocolate-y, creamy, sensual – a total indulgence.

2) What will you be doing at “A Makey ‘do’”?

I’ll be beadweaving while sitting behind my stall, which will be filled with gorgeous (but very reasonably priced) necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Every hour for a nominal cost of 50p to cover materials, show attendees will be able to join me in making a delicate beadwoven floral mobile phone or bag charm.

3) Fish and Chips or Curry?

Oh, definitely fish and chips for me! I’m originally from the North-East of England – Sunderland – where they make the best fish and chips in the world. Crisp, golden batter, flaky white fish, fluffy chips covered with salt and vinegar. My mouth’s watering just thinking about it.

4) Where else can your wares usually be found?

5) Do you usually hang out in Sandwich, or are you a visitor?

I’ve only been to Sandwich once – last Summer on a day trip with my husband and two daughters – but I really loved the place! You’re so lucky to be able to live there all the time. We had a great day walking up and down the quaint little streets and walking round the town moat, stopping to look in the shops and the fancy took us. We also had an excellent tea in a little tea shop just round the corner, but I can’t remember its name. I’ll be visiting Sandwich again before the Makey Do – one of the things I do when I’m not crafting is walking, and I’m currently walking the Saxon Shore Way. This is a long-distance walk of some 160 miles from Gravesend in Kent to Hastings in Sussex, following the line of the ancient Kent/Sussex shore as it was in 300AD. Over the last two years I have covered the distance from Gravesend to Pluck’s Gutter (what a great name!) and the very next section I do, when I resume the walk this April, will take me from Pluck’s Gutter into Sandwich. I’ll wave hello to the Guildhall as I go past.

6) Who is your all-time hero?

There are a number of people who have inspired me over the years, and the person at the top of the “all time high” varies from time to time. At the moment it’s a man called James Partridge. At the age of 18, just before he went to Oxford University, James was badly burned in a car accident, which left him disfigured. But he didn’t let that stop him. He took his degree, and went to work in the NHS. He moved to the Channel Islands and took up farming, and wrote a book about his experience, called “Changing Faces”. It was such an impressive book that he was asked to set up a charity (which is also called Changing Faces), and his charity now helps other people with disfigurements. 7) Who got you started on your crafty journey?

My Grandma. When I was five she helped me to make a rag-doll out of one of my Grandad’s old socks. The doll was called Celandine, and from there I went on to embroidery, knitting and, of course, beading.

8) What colour draws you most?

Green and purple. And red, brown and gold. And blue, and grey, and black. And sometimes pink. But it’s most it’s green and purple.

9) Where do you go for inspiration?

Anywhere and everywhere. I get inspiration from the city streets on a sunny day, the countryside in winter, the way the light shines through a window, the shape of the clouds in the sky, flowers growing in my garden, book jackets in the library, the colour combination of clothes that friends and colleagues wear, and I’m particularly interested in vintage jewellery and jewellery from other cultures.

10) Do you dunk?

AArrgghh, no! Dunking is an invention of the Prince of Darkness. Biscuits are meant to be eaten dry, which is why they have to be baked in the oven until they’re all crispy!

1) If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be?

A Tunnocks teacake! I love the red and silver shiny wrappers and bright and cheerful retro packaging. I have heard there is even a Tunnocks teashop next to the factory in Uddington with all sorts of fantastic Tunnocks packaging creations in the window. It’s my ambition to visit this place! 2) What will you be doing at “A Makey ‘do’”?

I will be doing a few things at the Makey ‘do. In the morning I’ll be having a pic ‘n’ mix brooch making party. I will bring a vast selection of crochet flowers, buttons and trims so that people can mix and match their fave colours and make a brooch just how they want it! In the afternoon bunting making will take over. I will have a whole stack of gingham for people to make their own customised bunting. I’ll be bringing templates, stamps, fabric paint and trimmings galore to decorate and adorn pre-made bunting ready to be threaded onto tape. Visitors will be able to sew and stick on letters, flowers, or anything else that takes their fancy. I will also be selling little ‘Makey ‘do’ kits to take away, including my bunting anklets!

3) Fish and Chips or Curry?

Mmm, curry. I don’t eat fish and although I am partial to chips and mushy peas I live near some of the finest curry purveyors in the city, if not the country! Can’t beat a beetroot dosa or Jai Krishna special jeera aloo!

4) Where else can your wares usually be found?

I have online shops on folksy (http://www.folksy.com/shops/FabricNation) and etsy (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6519255). I will also be at the Handm@de Craft Fairs in Cambridge, Winchester and Oxford (http://www.handmadecraftfairs.co.uk/) and a few others. My shops and blog (http://fabricnationadventures.blogspot.com/) usually have details of any fairs I’m planning to attend. I mainly work with vintage fabrics which are recycled into my collection of cats, dogs and other strays from the 1950s and 60s. I have always loved vintage prints, particularly barkcloth fabrics of the 1950s and 60s and began using these to make clothes which I sold on my stall as a teenager (no dull Saturday job for me!). I am very pleased to say the stall bug has gripped me again and I’m looking forward to doing more stalls before the year is out and meeting more amazing designer makers.

5) Do you usually hang out in Sandwich, or are you a visitor?

I am a visitor, and very much looking forward to it. I love taking day trips to new and undiscovered towns and villages around the UK. My perfect day is arriving at a new place and exploring all the charity shops! Sandwich looks really pretty, so I’m really looking forward to visiting.

6) Who is your all-time hero?

It has to be John Peel. The discovery of his show and all the wonderful music he championed in my teenage years was a turning point for me. I love music, and his show opened up a whole world to me of fab music, but also literature and art as I obsessively explored to origins of the reference to books, films and artists that post-punk popsters littered their songs with.

7) Who got you started on your crafty journey?

My family always made things, from little flowery dresses my mum made for me, my nan’s knitted creations and my aunty’s lovely needlework. We always darned, mended and fixed things too. As a teenager without much money living far from any fancy boutiques, the only way to make an entrance was to make your clothes yourself, so many a brightly printed curtain ended up as a skirt, top or dress. So my friends inspired me in this respect too as well as the whole DIY ethos of just getting on and making stuff in your kitchen and front room with what ever you had. I also love vintage kid’s craft books. I have many of my own still including a very dog eared copy of the Puffin ‘Something to Do’ book which was my favourite book as a child.

8) What colour draws you most?

Colours in general draw me, especially lovely and surprising combinations, I like the mix of pink and green, brown and sky blue or orange and turquoise. I love the quality of colour used in old printed ephemera, especially paperbacks, board games, magazines and packaging from the 1950s. I could gaze at these for hours!

9) Where do you go for inspiration?

I cannot walk past a charity shop without looking inside and get lots of pleasure and inspiration from my charity shop finds from the 1950s and 60s including dressers, fabric, games, buttons, china and scraps of printed ephemera. I love the Opie packaging collections and the collections at the Geffrye Museum and Bethnal Green Museum of childhood.

10) Do you dunk?

‘fraid so! A Tunnocks wafer and cup of earl grey tea.

No, not the band. Unfortunatly I haven't been able to book any live music yet for the 'do'. BOOO. But I have booked the amazing, the celebrated, the local; NiftyKnits YYYYAAAAAAYYYYEEE!!

1) If you were a cake, what kind of cake would you be?
I wouldn’t be a sophisticated gateau, I’d be something chocolatey, maybe with smarties on top. Or if I’m to be a homemade cake, I’ll be a quick and easy vinegar cake – recipe here http://niftyknits-somuchyarnsolittletime.blogspot.com/2009/01/vinegar-cake-or-dietwhat-decision.html

2) What will you be doing at “A Makey ‘do’”?
I’ll probably be looking a bit sleepy as I’ll be coming home from holiday the night before! I’ll be manning (womanning?) my stall full of knitted and crocheted novelties – animals, jewellery, flowers, morris dancers and even an occasional scarf or glove.

3) Fish and Chips or Curry?
Fish and chips every time.

4) Where else can your wares usually be found?
I can be found at http://www.niftyknits.folksy.com/ for those of us who like spending £££ and http://www.niftyknits.etsy.com/ if you can handle $$$. Last year for the first time I held a stall at the Tenterden Folk Festival, which is where my knitted Morris Dancers were launched. I shall have to make sure I bring along a mini dancer dressed in the Wantsum Morris kit, I believe they’re the local Sandwich side.

5) Do you usually hang out in Sandwich, or are you a visitor?
I am a true Maid of Kent: I was actually born in Deal, almost next door to Sandwich, but moved away at the age of 10 and only moved back to live in Kent (Tenterden) a few years ago.

6) Who is your all-time hero?
Steve Irwin is my family’s hero, he inspired us to own quite a few reptiles when my children were growing up, and we always wanted to go Australia Zoo to meet him. Sadly, we’ve left it too late. I’ve just finished knitting a mini-Steve for my son’s birthday – I’ll show you if you promise not to let him see it!

7) Who got you started on your crafty journey?

My Grandmother taught me to knit more years ago than I care to remember, but I only took it up again a few years ago when I was off sick from teaching. When the house started to fill with knits my son’s girlfriend, Lenny, told me about Etsy and the rest, as they say, is history!

8) What colour draws you most?
Tricky one! I love bright colours (you don’t have to spend long in my shops to work that out!) and purple is probably my favourite – if you’re looking for me at the MakeyDo, I’ll be the one with purple hair!

9) Where do you go for inspiration?
Out in the countryside works every time, I love walking. Sometimes it’s direct inspiration (for instance my knitted spring flowers) and sometimes it’s just being outside and having time and space to think without wandering off to the computer to check emails and chat on the forums.

10) Do you dunk?
Absolutely not! I’ve even broken my husband of the habit. Bleurgh! Nasty soggy bits in the bottom of a cup!

The venue

This is the Sandwich Guildhall which has been booked, and a deposit paid as the venue for the 'Makey do'. Part of the building is very old and is used for wedding and other ceremonies. We will be using the modern extension which has a lift and floor to ceiling windows for excellent natural light. In the summer the forecourt is bustling with people. The bus stop for the town is here and there is a chip shop so plenty of people enjoying an al fresco lunch. There is a very large pay and display car park at the rear of the building and from here to the town people pass through the alley in the building and therefore past the main entrance to the event. Sandwich is so picturesque, and I'm getting more takers for tables every week. I am looking for a volunteer stall holder to be my first 'interview-ee', I would like to have a picture of you, but a least some nice images of the sort of thing you'll be bringing with you. Fancy it?

A Makey 'do' is not being held for profit to the organiser, (me!)- had I mentioned that? I just want to cover my costs and maybe sell some things from my own stall. When I was trying to work out if this whole idea was viable I got a quote for the venue and one for the insurance. The insurance was nearly as much as the hall hire, this meant I would have to be really creative with the advertising and that I might end up out of pocket. Sandwich is a great community with lots of do-ers. Not least of whom are a group called B.A.S.H (Bringing Alive Sandwich Heritage) I was chatting to one of their number she said that as the group has annual insurance they may be able to cover my event, I'd just need to mention them on the posters. I was invited to their committee meeting last week and the vote was unanimous- a Makey do is now officially 'supported by B.A.S.H'-cool. This means I can really promote the event and do nice things like get these badges made by Swirlyarts. (Aren't they Ace?- do you think I could get some made with 'princess' and 'genius' for daily wear?)

I live in a beautiful town. Sandwich is in East Kent and has a ram-shackle mix of very old houses, quaint narrow streets and great facilities. What better place to hold the first makey do? There are lots of lovely village halls and old churches which hold regular events but I have reserved the Guildhall for 'A Makey 'do''. Although probably the most expensive this venue has a large car park next to it, a nice kitchen, a lift, lots of toilet facilities, is in the centre of town, is a nice big space with lots of natural light, really friendly staff........I mean it's perfect. (for anyone who likes to know these sort of things there are at least four pubs within 2 minutes walk.)

Wouldn't it be nice if crafty types wot make things could have a nice place to sell them once in a while-not to become evil capitalist consumer types but just to share the love. Wouldn't it be ace if people could come and meet the crafty types and see how nice they were and actually get the chance to make something, with their own little hands. If other crafty types came along but didn't actually want to sell anything perhaps they'd like the chance to buy some more materials. If everyone could do those things whilst drinking tea and eating cake wouldn't the world-or at least East Kent-be a nicer place?
